A feather tucked into a pocket.

A collection of gum nuts carefully arranged on a log.

A handful of leaves carried home with great importance.

Children have a natural tendency to collect treasures from the world around them. While these discoveries may appear ordinary to adults, they often hold deep meaning for children.

Collecting allows children to notice details, compare differences, sort objects and build connections with their environment. It is a simple but powerful way of learning.

The next time your child proudly presents a collection of sticks, stones or leaves, consider pausing before asking them to put it down.

Instead, you might ask:

  • What drew you to this treasure?

  • How did you find it?

  • What do you notice about it?

These small conversations help nurture curiosity and encourage children to see themselves as capable explorers of the natural world.
