After a period of rain, the forest floor often reveals hidden surprises.
This week we noticed small fungi appearing amongst fallen leaves and decaying wood. Some were no larger than a coin, while others stood proudly above the leaf litter like tiny umbrellas.
Fungi play an important role in nature. They help break down organic matter and return nutrients to the soil, supporting the health of entire ecosystems.
For children, fungi invite close observation. Their shapes, colours and textures encourage curiosity and wonder.
If you come across fungi on your next walk, consider slowing down and taking a closer look.
What shape does it remind you of?
How many different fungi can you find?
What colours and patterns do you notice?
Nature often rewards those who take the time to look a little closer.
