Listening to Birdsong

The bush is rarely as quiet as it first seems.
This week we paused for a moment without talking and noticed just how many different bird calls surrounded us. Some were loud and clear, while others were soft and hidden high in the trees.
Birds use their voices to communicate with one another. They sing to attract mates, protect their territory and stay connected with their families.
For children, listening carefully builds attention and encourages them to experience nature using all of their senses, not just their eyes.
Next time you’re outdoors, stop for a minute and simply listen.
• How many different bird calls can you hear?
• Can you tell if the sounds are near or far away?
• Which bird song do you like the most?
Sometimes the best way to discover nature is to become wonderfully still.
